Rated as one of top cities for quality of life, Vancouver features a lot of greenery, a clean downtown with lively neighborhoods, as well as a number of outdoors attractions.
Stanley Park provides ample opportunities to bike, walk or enjoy sweeping views of Vancouver's surroundings. A short hop from Stanley Park stands the Capilano suspension bridge (people afraid of heights beware!). Also not far from the city center is Lynn Canyon Park.
A leisurely ride on a ferry with the rental car allows to visit Vancouver Island. There the famous Butchart Gardens showcase gorgeous flowers. Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia, sits on the southern tip of the island.

Costa Rica was nicknamed "The Switzerland of Central America" and it is easy to understand why. With no army, a relatively low unemployment rate, and a longer life expectancy than the United States, Costa Rica also does not suffer from drug wars and violent militias that plague other South American countries.
Despite some warnings about safety (for instance, people trying to cause flat tires so they can stop you and steal your money), we never felt unsafe, except perhaps for some streets of San Jose (no one accosted us though). Due to the prominence of American tourists there, the country accepts dollars with open arms and often with a favorable exchange rate. The road system is very decent and makes renting a car doable, but a GPS is a must need as well as a 4x4 for driving on some unpaved roads.
In the northern side of Costa Rica there are tall vocalnoes with blue rivers and fresh, cool nights while the southern side has hot, stuffy jungles with all kinds of animals, monkeys and sloths among others. For nature lovers, this country offers a bounty of waterfalls, forests, volcanoes and also rolling hills with cattle.

In January, Stefan met his friend Owen and worked on improving his driving skills (disclaimer: student driver - not on public roads).
In February, we hiked on Angel Island and attended the Logitech winter ball. The traditional Valentine's Day party took place at his school as well.
In March, we eat all things green for Saint Patrick's day, and started planting the vegetable beds.

Not much snow this year in Lake Tahoe, but we were still able to enjoy sledding on the top of Mont Rose highway. The clouds made for some nice sunsets as well. The lone pine at Emerald stands proud, overlooking the quiet waters below.
Oh yes, I forgot, raclette and fondue on the menu, of course.

In October, Stefan celebrated his 6th birthday, we celebrated our 10th anniversary, we watched the Blue Angels performance from Berkeley, more homemade pizza was made, and Stefan attended the Halloween parade at his school.
In November, we built vegetable boxes and enjoyed an evening walk with gorgeous views of Mount Diablo. We also went to Maui, Hawaii for a few days.
In December, we had a late Thanksgiving turkey after our trip to Hawaii. We installed a Christmas tree and set up a lighted snowman outside.
